The Interns Blog italki Team Building Our new summer intern Reid from the United States started work at italki on August 4th.  We wanted him to write a quick blog about his first experiences working with the team here in Shanghai.  The below post is written by him. My First Week at italki I (on the far left) attempt to hit a bullseye while playing darts with the other italki staff. When I walked into the italki offices for my first day on the job, I certainly had that first day at work anxious feeling. But as I met the italki team and figured out my way around the office, my nervousness quickly drifted away. I felt more relaxed as I came to realize that italki is not an overly serious, unorganized startup. It is, rather, a very efficient yet fun work environment. So yes, my first-day outfit of a suit and tie certainly stood out… As part of my first week the entire italki team visited a Shanghai gun range for a company bonding event. This being my first week in Shanghai, I have to say I was pretty surprised that I would be shooting guns in China of all places. italki is a very international company and as such it is hard for many of the English-speaking staff to really connect with the Chinese-speaking staff. That said, the power of sport once again flexed its ability to transcend cultural differences and bring people together: while the entire italki team was shooting bow and arrows, we were all aligned in a common cause of cheering on our colleagues to do well. And, when we later took to the gun range I didn’t need to use Chinese to joke with one of my Chinese colleagues about my very poor final score… The entire experience consisted of shooting bow and arrows, guns, throwing darts, playing fuzball, and most all 12-year old birthday party activities (minus the guns, of course). Our team bonding event wa s, to say the least, an enjoyable, enlightening experience that allowed  for all of us to connect with each other on a deeper level regardless of where we were from or what language we spoke. One of my colleagues, Karthik, shoots a bow and arrow for the first time. The employees here at italki are genuinely passionate about what they do and it shows in the quality of their work. The entire premise behind this company is to give people the power of a new language and thus a new culture; It is genuinely so amazing to watch as users from around the world go from having zero knowledge about a language to using it consistently in their daily lives. All in all, I remain excited to work at italki and gain further perspective on the world through my relationships with my international colleagues and italki users. At this point, students are expected to be able to manage their own time to a certain extent. They should be able to start their homework on their own and ask pertinent questions when appropriate. Additionally, middle schoolers should be able to comprehend how much time it takes to finish their homework relative to how much free time they have. Unfortunately, many young students simply dont possess these skills just yet. They’re working them out through trial and error, or they need more guidance from an adult. Some students adjust to this transition without too much trouble, but others develop their time management skills only after they have had difficulty in the classroom. 1.   Homework Overwhelming amounts of homework is one of the biggest issues middle schoolers will face. In all honesty, theres probably more homework given out to the average student than is entirely necessary at this age given the great emotional and physical growth also taking place. Regardless, students need to complete their assignments on time with their very best effort. One thing students can do to make their homework easier is prioritize. They can determine which assignments are busy work and which help them learn a skill later on. This is a huge step in being able to conquer the amount of essays and research assignments given out at this age (READ: What to Do When Your Child Has Conflicts With Classmates). 2. Individualized attention Another really important aspect of time management in middle school is to recognize the importance of individual attention. Students need to know which subjects they excel in â€" and can spend an average amount of time on- as well as which subjects they need to give their full attention to on every single assignment. Students may need the help of a parent or tutor to help them identify what their weaknesses are and how to turn them into strengths. Some kids may have always struggled with math, for example, and will already know they need to spend extra time on this subject. Other kids have excelled in math all the way through elementary school and will only now begin to struggle. 3. Managing free time Middle schoolers, for the most part, would much rather be outside playing sports or hanging out with friends than working diligently on homework. It can be a pretty substantial battle between parent and child to get a student at this age to focus on their future. On the other hand, if kids only ever work on homework and dont have a chance to get together with friends, they’ll be missing out on important social development skills that will help them feel supported throughout this difficult period of growth. Finding a balance between work and play is one of the most challenging things for a person at this stage to do, but its also one of the most essential. 4. Communicating with the teacher Teachers notice when students are starting to fall behind and what makes a student tick when it comes to academics. Students might put a huge effort into subjects they excel at or are interested in. Alternatively, they tend to tune out when it comes to something that doesnt have a real world application, or they find to be overly dry. While the entire country speaks one language, the way Norwegians speak and write in the northern part of the country varies distinctly from the way they speak in the rest of the country. The northern dialect is called nynorsk, and something as simple as the word “milk” has two completely different spellings and pronunciations depending on where you are in the country.2. Limited Availability of ResourcesSome languages aren’t even written down, only spoken. It seems wild to consider that in some places written language doesnt exist, but it’s true. The idea of writing down language is not as ancient as it seems  and only came about during the rise of civilizations around the world.As a result, if a language is not widely used (and especially if its strictly oral) there may be a lack of interest or great difficulty in creating resources for it. This means you might have trouble finding dictionaries, courses, textbooks, teachers and other critical tools for learning a new language. Unless youre dedicated enough  to travel to the place where the language is spoken, things could get tricky.For example, Native American languages historically were only spoken languages, not written ones. As such, its been difficult to teach native languages to the next generation and other people because of the lack of written language resources.This is also true for the Sami languages in Scandinavia. However, there isnt one definitive language that all humans once spoke. All over the world, various groups of humans developed languages that sounded and were structured differently. This is why Norwegian is so different from, say, Thai.For instance, native English speakers typically have a more difficult time learning Asian languages and vice ve rsa. Because Asian languages are not related to Germanic languages (which is where English originated), theyre more difficult for the corresponding speakers to master.
